Honoring Asian and Pacific Islander Heritage Month

Stop Asian Hate

As a middle-aged, white American woman practicing acupuncture and Chinese medicine, awareness of the cultural appropriation that could become part of my daily routines if I don’t make a conscious effort to stay involved and in support of the roots of this medicine and the Chinese culture that it comes from.

As I reflected this year, I know I could do better, especially in the local Chinese community right here in our downtown neighborhood. The local Chinese garden right in the Vitalize neighborhood of downtown Portland offers volunteering opportunities. It would be an honor to contribute while enjoying the energy of such a beautiful place. View volunteering opportunities at the Lan Su Chinese Gardens. I hope they let me join them.

Speaking of gardening, it’s Spring, and the Portland Japanese Garden is a beautiful place to explore nature, the spirit of Zen, and other aspects of the importance of nature in Japanese culture. This wonderful garden offers year-round interest for all. Becoming a member of either of these gardens is also a great way to support them and the opportunities they provide.

This month, as I take time to dig into Chinese, Asian, and Pacific Islander culture, history, art, food, and people, I invite you to enjoy some of the content I have found supportive in my awareness-building efforts.
